Ingenious today announced that its two music VCTs have made a joint investment of 2 million to support the release of multi-million selling dance act the Prodigy's fifth studio album.
With a further six deals in the final stages of negotiation, Ingenious Music VCT plc is now approaching full commitment, just 18 months after the close of fundraising, whilst the second fund, Ingenious Music VCT 2 plc, has less than 10 million of its original funding left to commit.
This latest investment has been made through the formation of a joint venture company between the VCTs and established label Cooking Vinyl. Formed in 1986, Cooking Vinyl has, over the last twenty years, branched out across the musical genres and is currently pioneering digital distribution in the independent sector. The label is renowned for its dedication to quality and distinctive sounds and has achieved global success over the years with artists such as Billy Bragg, Frank Black and Echo and the Bunnymen.
Prodigy were formed in the early 1990s and have built a significant track record in the music industry, achieving immense popularity and worldwide renown. This album follows the success of their last three studio albums, including their greatest hits album in late 2005, all of which reached number 1 in the UK chart. Their first number one, ‘The Fat of the Land' in 1997, cemented the band's position as one of the most internationally successful acts in the hard dance genre, staying at number 1 for six weeks in the UK and topping the charts in the US, where it sold more than two million copies.
The Prodigy are renowned for their explosive live shows and have won international acclaim globally, playing in excess of 150 gigs over the last two years alone. Described by Rolling Stone as “british, outlandish,future punk”, highlights range from a free show for 400,000 Russians in Red Square, Moscow to headlining all the major European festivals including Glastonbury, Reading and T in the Park in the UK. Their eclectic musical style and raw energy on stage gained the band a wide range of music fans, crediting them with bringing dance rock into the live arena and securing their status as 'King of the Beats'.
This deal has come at an exciting time for Ingenious, which only recently launched its latest VCT, Ingenious Live. This fund is seeking to raise 50 million to invest in the live events sector which is a significant growth sector for the UK. Ingenious intends to take advantage of the opportunities available by targeting events across concerts, festivals, conferences, trade fairs, exhibitions, sporting events and theatre.

About Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs)
Provided that shares in a VCT are held for at least five years, qualifying investors receive income tax relief at the rate of 30% on the amount subscribed for VCT shares up to a maximum of 200,000 in any one tax year. Dividends and gains on the disposal of Shares are currently exempt from tax in respect of investments not exceeding 200,000 in any one tax year.
