Interview with the creator: Maxim from The Prodigy
By Faye Cannon / February 2010

Maxim: When and why did you start your jewellery label?
Maxim: It’s been going for a year now. The whole idea for me was just getting some jewellery which inspired me. I've always enjoyed looking in jewellery shops, but I never used to see anything that caught my eye or anything that really stood out. After meeting Bobby White – the Young Jeweller of the Year – last year, we formed this company. So it started in a natural way, rather than being forced. It was about creating good jewellery which you wouldn’t find on the high street.
Maxim: Other than your imagination, what else contributes to your designs?
Maxim: The inspiration is more to create something original that isn’t in the shops. I do a lot of travelling being in the band, and whatever city I go to I check out the jewellery shops and fashion stores.
I’m sure I’m not the only person that goes into a clothes shop and tries to find the unique jacket that nobody else has got, something that just stands out, and it’s the same way for jewellery. Just to find something that turns you on, that gets you excited, something you can wear and people will go, ‘Look at that!’ To be able to create that and give people the opportunity to have that, that was the thought process really.
Maxim: Is there any reason why you didn’t go into clothing?
Maxim: Who says I’m not?
Maxim: So is there a future clothing line aswell?
Maxim: [Laughs] Watch this space... but jewellery is what it’s about for now!
Maxim: What music do you listen to when you are designing?
Maxim: I don’t listen to any music. Inspiration for jewellery can come from anywhere. It could be from just walking down the street and seeing a picture in a window or something that someone else is wearing, or out in a club, or at a restaurant. You could see another piece of jewellery that someone else is wearing and think: 'Wow, if I did that, or that and manipulated that…' Inspiration is always around me. I don’t sit down and physically put pen to paper and design jewellery. It’s like, I could be out and see something and that’s an idea, and then I evolve it.
Maxim: Do Keith or Liam own any of your pieces?
Maxim: Of course they do!
Maxim: Any specific ones?
Maxim: Yeah, Keith has got a couple of Crusader pieces.
Maxim: So, you would say they’re fans?
Maxim: Yeah. You know, if they do something, I’m a fan of what they do. We’re quite close-knit. I like creating all the time, it’s what I do. Whether it’s something like a paper aeroplane or whatever, I’m always thinking, always creating and at the moment I’m really enjoying creating jewellery. I love coming up with ideas and, you know, I’ve got the Young Jeweller of the Year to realise them for me, so what a good position for me to be in! I’m always thinking of new ideas and he makes a few individual pieces just for me. I’ve designed a grenade for myself, which is covered in sapphires and has got my logo on it. It’s probably a bit ostentatious, but I can and have the Young Jeweller of the Year to do it for me! [Laughs]
Maxim: What are the bands movements in 2010?
Maxim: We’re doing a lot of things, but at the moment I’m doing jewellery.
Maxim: Would you recommend any of your jewellery as a Valentine’s gift?
Maxim: Definitely, we have sparkle pendants for the lady who’d like to buy her husband something, and we have feminine ones as well for all the gentlemen out there who’d like to buy their ladies a pendant. They could buy a Helen of Troy pendant. If you look on the website, there’s plenty of stuff on there. But it appeals to anybody, if you’re into it and you can pull it off…
Maxim: So you are going to continue with more designs throughout the year?
Maxim: Yeah, exactly.
